Education in Action Accomplishments

Since our inception in 2007, Education in Action has sent 10 delegations of volunteers to Guatemala and provided over $320,000 in funding to the CCDA. The funds enable the CCDA to purchase materials used for the construction of various housing and infrastructure projects that the EIA delegation assist in while in Guatemala. Here is a summary of their accomplishments.

• Construction of 86 homes for impoverished families in rural communities.
• Construction of adobe-making ovens.
• Eco model housing project.
• Construction of a school in the Ixloc San Pedrito Community which the community has since named Escuela Roberto Miranda.
• Construction and renovation of various pre-school, elementary and secondary schools.
• Funded the salary of a full time school teacher in El Esfuerzo for 6 years from 2008 to 2013.
• Funding for the purchase of a coffee drying plant and water pipeline project to increase coffee production at the CCDA coffee plantation in the highlands of Lake Atitlan.
• Construction of various community centres.
• Construction of the nutritional centre in Nueva Providencia.
• Renovation of the centre of labour convergence in Cantón Sepela, Quiche.
• Construction of Instituto Básico por Cooperativa de Comunidad Nueva Vida, Sololá.
• Construction of the medical centre in Quixayá.
• Medical dispensary support.
• Funding for the Cuban Medical Brigade in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake.
• Worked with farmers and families in poor rural communities in most departments of Guatemala.

Over the years, EIA has carried out numerous information and education activities in the Ottawa area of the reality, challenges and successes of the CCDA network and its numerous community and individual members in Guatemala, including via sponsoring CCDA delegations to Canada, organising meetings with government officials and sponsoring events of sister solidarity organisations.

• Rnovation of the centre of labour convergence in Cantón Sepela Quiche.
2014 (11 volunteers)
• Renovation of Santa Cruz High School.
• Construction of Vista Hermosa Elementary School.
• Construction of Nueva Vida Pre-School.
• Construction of Labor Buena Vista Community Centre.
• Construction of San Filipe community Centre.
• Construction of a community kitchen and dining facility.
2013 (delegation cancelled)
For the safety of the 9 volunteer crew, this delegation was cancelled due to an elevated level of violence surrounding the housing project area. However, funds raised for this delegation helped to contribute towards the following:
