Welcome

Education in Action was established in 2006 by the late Roberto Miranda, a Spanish instructor and social rights activist who was born in Guatemala.

Education in Action is composed of Canadian  volunteers who work collaboratively with a group of grassroots farmers in Guatemala called the Comité Campesino del Altiplano (CCDA). The CCDA is involved in sustainability projects supporting land reform and protecting the indigenous communities of Guatemala.

Education in Action raises funds and awareness through the sale and promotion of Café Justicia, "fair trade plus" coffee, for projects in Guatemala, including a yearly building project (community centres/houses) and the salary of a school teacher.

In 2014, there has been a shift in the CCDA strategy from building houses to building schools and community centres, in order to impact a greater number of families.

Each spring, a group of Canadian volunteers participate in a two-week delegation to Guatemala working alongside the CCDA and local community members. The delegation experiences a cultural exchange in Guatemala, learning of struggles from its history as well as current challenges. The group witnesses first hand the positive impact that sales of Café Justicia have as 100% of the coffee proceeds are returned to the CCDA and their projects including training, educational scholarships as well as the defence of Mayan culture and sustainable agricultural practices.

Helping the CCDA and protecting and empowering is possible because of people like you. Thank you for all of your support and we hope to see you on a future delegation!

Project goals:

  • Empower the communities through solidarity.
  • Educate Canadian participants regarding international solidarity and the empowerment of communities.
  • Security and protection for the CCDA and communities through International Accompaniment.
  • Work hand in hand with families in the construction of homes, community centers, or schools, depending on the greatest need each year.
